Newborn Baby Photographer {Laura Yost Photography}

I am going to be going back in time for this blog post. A little over a month ago, I had an amazing thoughtful sister reach out, wanting to gift a newborn photoshoot to her sister!

*Did you know I provide gift certificates for family, baby and maternity sessions?*

I was so excited to also learn this lovely new family also lived in my neighborhood of northern manhattan! Prior to our session, I had my new mom fill out a questionnaire, listing what colors, swaddles and props she wanted me to bring.

*Did you know I have a studio in Inwood, but I also travel to my clients homes all across NYC, NJ and the lower Hudson Valley?*

When I arrived, this little baby boy was perfect. He was so happy being wrapped up, and posed in safe, comfortable and super cute poses.

With this session, we talked about a lot of blues. I immediately knew I wanted to bring this new dark blue backdrop, and the moon prop. There is a song from musical theatre that has a lyric “I’ll give you stars and the moon and a soul to guide you and a promise I’ll never go”. It’s not about babies, but it does remind me of parenthood, and everything you will do for your child.

Also, lets talk about his perfect smile for a second, how cute is that?!

When Mom’s sister reached out, one of her first questions was “can you do baby in a bucket?” Can I? I love this pose! It is super relaxed, and more importantly very safe. I always have a spotter close to me just incase the newborn startles, whether that be my assistant in studio or mom and dad at home.

This little dude definitely pulled off the blues right?!

In newborn photography, this pose is called potato sack. We get the baby swaddled up in anywhere from 2-3 wraps, and round them out. Then place them either in a prop, a well or a cat scratcher. One of the most important things with this pose, is hand placement. We always want the arms to the sides, and the hands below the chin. That way we know baby is able to breathe, and is very comfortable!

I took this one on the flokati (the fluffy blanket) with a bonnet as well.

I always try to do a close up shot, to really get the details. We want to see his tiny hands, his long eyelashes, and his adorable lips. Baby is only this small for a little while, we want to make sure we capture it all.
To mix it up a little bit, I also brought a green wrap, and placed him in a round basket. He fit perfectly!

Doesn’t he look so peaceful in all of these?! I can’t wait for mom to send me photos in a few months to show how much he has grown!
