It can be overwhelming trying to find a newborn photographer in New York City. If you google that term, around 20 pages pop up. And that is if you are googling that specific phrase!
Not sure about you, but after I google something, I open google maps and filter by reviews or location. I am not going to lie, I have definitely gone to get my haircut in deep Brooklyn, even though I lived in Washington Heights, because the reviews were phenomenal (Ariel, I miss you, and I wish you still did my hair!)
But what I notice when people ask for recommendations on facebook or other social platforms, is usually, “I am looking for a newborn photographer who wont break the bank” or “I am looking for a baby photographer that is cheap, maybe someone just starting off?”
I get it, money is tight. But would you post that you were looking for a mechanic that was just starting off? Or a doctor who was still in high school?
Newborn photography looks easy, it is a sleeping baby in cute poses. How hard can it be?
Hard.
Safety is my top concern when photographing a little one, followed by making sure they are adorable. But safety is by far, the top concern.
Most newborn photography is smoke and mirrors. It is composites of different shots stitched together in photoshop. It is optical illusions, it is having an assistant always within arms length to make sure baby doesn’t go anywhere.
And I know all too well, we look at pinterest, instagram, facebook and even now tik tok, and think “I can do that!” but in reality, you shouldn’t.
You can find the cheapest baby photographer, but wouldn’t you rather feel you were investing in something and someone that took safety seriously? While also giving you the cutest photos on the planet?
